Why think about phone numbers or chat id's? If you want to talk to somebody all you need is their name and the choice to talk or type.

Additionally why should you have to go back into contacts to update that person's info if it changes? If all that info was in a social networking site like Facebook then as a friend you would have access to those changes when your friend makes them.

When you want to contact somebody you select: Type or Talk and using the best method possible to type (gTalk, AIM, SMS, etc) or talk (cell phone call, voip protocol, gTalk) the app contacts them. If the person on the other end logs into a free option the program will seamlessly switch over to that method of typing/talking (that would be easier with typing).
