Airtel India slashes STD, roaming tariffs - and lately Android is their Savior!

According to press release in India, leading mobile operator Bharti Airtel slashed STD(long distance) and roaming tariffs by 43 percent benefiting its 62 million customers.

Sanjay Kapoor, President Mobile Services of Bharti Airtel had this to say:

With 70 percent STD customers in India using less than 5 minutes a month on STD calls and 80 percent mobile customers not using their phones while roaming, we have a compelling customer proposition and this will drive growth and usage in the India telecom industry.

This is great news for India mobile users since this would trigger off a new round of price war in the roaming and STD segments for mobile telephony in India.

Indians care a lot about mobile price. The device needs to be affordable. The high end phone are popular, but there's only a small rich segment which will buy them. If as a device provider, you want to make inroads into the indian market you better sell cheap phones. It better be cheap and functional.

Lately I've been getting calls.

It's from companies big and small all around the world who are interested in this new mobile O/S from Google and OHA called Android.

What do the companies ask me?

Well they are pretty excited about Android and want to know if their little mobile devices that they are manufacturing can run Android on it. And they are excited enough that they want to know if Android can be run today, right now.

What do i tell them?

I say the same thing that I've been told. Be patient.

Lately that's what I've been saying. Be patient. Android will be open sourced. It will happen. Soon.

While there are companies trying to develop their own proprietary devices coupled with their own proprietary mobile O/S, Android seemed to have opened a new door for a variety of new kind small and big companies. The kind of companies which are yet to make it big on the mobile world. The kind of companies which have the gut feeling that they have the stuff, but not yet proven. The kind of companies that have big dreams for future. The kind of companies which wants to play fair and open with their customers. The kind of companies which wants to play by the motto: "Don't be evil".

Lately the mobile devices are beginning to innovate.
Lately the mobile carriers are bringing down the price.
Lately the mobile O/S like Android are being open sourced.
Lately the customer like you and me are beginning to have our say on what exactly we want in our hands, and what we need exactly running in our mobile.

And Lately..

I'm only getting a feeling that what Linux failed to achieve on the desktop arena, Android would set to conquer. And in the process also take down the giants that we all know, are ruling the current desktop world.

Lately mobile companies are getting the much needed choice and freedom.

Lately Android is their savior!
