Is the iPhone poised to crush Android?
AndroidGuys published a rather controversial article titled
Why The iPhone Is Poised to Crush Android by Jamie Hunter recently. Jamie took on Robert Love, Google developer and Linux kernel contributor for saying the following:
There will also be no registration or certification requirements for Android development. No special permission from Google or the mobile carriers will be needed to make, deploy, or run applications for Android handsets.
Jamie obviously had some issue with the above statement and went on his tirade against Google Quality Control.
While fans of open source may be rejoicing at this news, others hoping that android would produce iPhone killers may be in for a rather rude awakening.
The Android developers were not amused by the article, and Jason from droidworks.com was quick to point out why Jamie is wrong in his latest blog article titled Understanding Android versus iPhone
My prediction: When the first Android phones make their debut, these same people are going to compare them to their slick/shiny iPhones and declare Android a failure.
And here's why they will be wrong..
Jason went on to clarify why Jamie was wrong and listed a few interesting points in support of Android. I tend to agree mostly with Jason and can also relate to the following question that he asked in his blog.
Seriously, how popular do you think the iPhone is going to be in China or India?
iPhone can be sleek and sexy for whatever it counts but there exists a hoard of masses who just don't care and are looking at a cheap mobile phone but still would enjoy a few mobile apps that can be delivered to them without any hassles.
And who can do this? Android, of course.

I am a big Android fan but I have such an intense allergy to that ugly non-neutral maroon (color = "programmer maroon". It goes with default grey and shiny black laquered furniture) colored Android emulator phone that so badly clashes with my app. (because it clashes with most colors) What happened to the nice white one of the earlier release? If you're gonna do a color, do fire engine red or something. "90s corporate cubicle maroon" (my new name for it) just assaults my senses. Visual allergies are rough. That's one reason I am drawn to the iPhone. Besides it's obvious utility, it is just a joy to gaze at.
MAC,
Wait until the iphone runs Android. Then it would a greater joy to actually use iphone on top of your gazing!

The iPhone is a product. Android is a revolution. Unless Apple moves to make several "levels" of iPhones at various prices and features, it will not be able to keep up with Android who have a hoard of partners working on making Android and the OHA leaders of the industry.
Apple has a HUGE opportunity here. They could make the iPhone has dominating as the iPod. But... in order to do so... they have to allow for some flexibility in product offering. There can't be just one "iPhone"...
I'm rooting for Android though so I hope Apple effs it up.
Agreed with the comments.
Freedom!

Both iPhone and Android based phones will have their fans. iPhone is just a fashion phone with some cool features, nothing more. I hope with the new version 2.0 there will be some changes in positive direction. However it's just a fashion phone, nothing more. On the other hand you all know what Android offers even before the first devices on the market. It's powerfull as Windows Mobile, I just hope it's not so slow and buggy ;)
What I like to see is a phone, sexy as iPhone but with Android or WM OS. I want HUGE bright and solid display with multitouch functionality (c'mon Android devs, this is the future! Please add it to the OS!). I want pretty and easy finger navigation with animations like iPhone. HTC Dream is not what I want to hold in my hand. Is it so hard to make a nice looking device as iPhone? Apple did it, why not HTC, HP or Eten? I'm not an Apple fan. I'm just a person who knows what he wants!
Since 2002 I have wanted my games on phones, but I didn't like the network owners controlling things.
It wasn't even about the 30% high way robbery that the networks wanted. I wanted control over what is mine.
How could I even market to those people that unlocked their phones?
People say many people have unlocked the iPhone, but how do I get them to download my apps. It's not like I could throw it up on eBay or other buy it now site without dealing with the network provider.
So I stayed out. I waited 5 years to make some real mobile games and now I can without being controlled by the network owners like a pet.
I am ready to crush anything on a closed network iPhone or other. So, I would say the closed network phones are coming to an end. I will help Google see to it if they keep FCC to their bargain.
Some people are happy using only what Apple allows them to use and have no need for anything else. Believe it or not though, there are those of us who don't like Apple products and software and prefer the ability to choose our own software and hardware. I understand this may be hard for some Apple people to comprehend. :-) We are excited for Android because it finally offers us this ability to choose, which we've had for ages with computers, on our mobile phones.
