I got an HTC EVO recently because I was excited about having an open source linux phone I could customize. I have been using linux distros like ubuntu and fedora core for years.

After owning this device for a few month I feel like Sprint has vomited all over my expectations of linux.

To start I can't get super user access without "rooting" the phone through some complicated procedure that voids my warranty and might just brick my device. On top of that each update they come out with seems to mess up the rooted versions. So there is basically no safe sprint approved way for me to customize the phone

The OS is saved in my system memory rather than to a drive like the sd card so every app I have seems to cumulatively reduce my devices functionality.

And the best part of all this??? Before I even turn it on, it comes preloaded jam packed with tons of useless apps I apparently don't have any legal permission to uninstall or replace from the phone I just forking paid for.

After some light reading I see that apparently the only way for me to get rid of their garbage is an even more complicated and meticulous " proceed at your own risk " procedure that I can only begin to try after a successful "rooting" (warranty voiding procedure).

1. Is this really open source linux if I can't legally be super user on my own forking device?

2. Is their some way to sue sprint for false advertising?
2b.Or maybe its not really android at all?
2c. Maybe you guys know some way I can get the real android os on my device?

3.How do I get gedit running on this thing?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

HTC Evo

You need to root the phone, do a few searches for rooting HTC EVO and you should find out how to sort this out.
